2002 Clk320 Key Will Not Lock Doors

Ok but why wont my key to my car work like i previously mentioned starting about 18 mths ago i couldn t open the trunk with the electronic key now it will no longer open or lock the doors mb paul. The main symptoms are the key won t unlock the doors or start the car. By the way thanks for response.
